Suitable for both car and air travel, this model balances durability with convenience, though it’s not designed for pets over 16 lbs. Amazon Basics Airline Approved Soft-Sided Mesh Pet Travel Carrier with Shoulder Strap, Removable Washable Fleece Pad, Top Opening, Ventilation for Dog, Cat, up to 22 pounds, 19.7Lx12Wx12H in., Black
This carrier excels in offering a comfortable, well-ventilated space for pets up to 22 lbs, with features that prioritize ease of travel, such as top and front openings and an adjustable shoulder strap. Compared to the Sherpa Deluxe, it conforms closely to airline under-seat dimensions, making it a practical choice for frequent flyers. Its washable fleece pad and multiple openings enhance convenience, though the mesh fabric might wear over time if not handled carefully. Henkelion Cat and Dog Carrier – TSA Airline Approved, Soft Sided, Collapsible, Waterproof, Black
This lightweight carrier is designed for small to medium pets up to 15 lbs, emphasizing waterproof fabric and foldability. It surpasses some competitors, like the Cat Dog Carrier, with its waterproof material, making it more suitable for unpredictable weather or messy situations. Its foldable design and mesh sides offer convenience, but its size limits it to smaller pets, and the absence of extra features like a washable bed reduces convenience. The carrier’s waterproof quality makes it a good choice for outdoor or rainy-day travel, yet it may not be the best fit for larger or more active pets needing more space or ventilation.
Pros:- TSA approved for airline travel
- Waterproof fabric for weather resistance
- Foldable for compact storage
- Mesh sides for ventilation
Cons:- Limited to pets up to 15 lbs, not suitable for larger animals

- Size may be too small for longer or larger pets

Not ideal for: Owners with larger pets or those seeking a carrier with added comfort features like a removable bed.
- Dimensions:15″ x 9″ x 9″
- Weight Limit:15 lbs
- Material:Polyester fabric
- Features:Waterproof, collapsible, mesh sides
- Color:Black
Our verdict“This carrier is best suited for small pets needing waterproof protection and easy folding for outdoor or variable-weather travel.”
Sherpa Original Deluxe Travel Pet Carrier, Airline Approved – Black, Large
This carrier is favored for its spacious interior and multiple carrying options, making it suitable for small pets up to 22 lbs who need a more roomier environment. It outperforms the Amazon Basics model in size and features, with mesh panels for ventilation and a waterproof interior base. Its flexible wire frame helps it fit under most airplane seats, but its larger size can be bulky for quick trips or small storage spaces. The mesh panels, while ventilating, may be less durable over time if not handled carefully. This carrier makes sense for owners prioritizing comfort and versatility over compactness, though it may be overkill for very small or infrequent travelers.
Pros:- Fits under airplane seats with flexible wire frame
- Ventilated mesh panels for pet comfort

Cons:- Limited to pets up to 22 lbs, not suitable for larger animals

- Size:Large
- Weight Capacity:Pets up to 22 pounds
- Material:Mesh, fabric
- Features:Waterproof interior base, multiple carry options
Our verdict“This carrier is best for owners seeking a spacious, versatile, airline-approved option with excellent ventilation and multiple carrying modes.”
RUFF LIFE 101 Airline Approved Expandable Pet Carrier on Wheels – Soft Sided, Two Sided Expansion, for Dogs & Cats (Black)
This carrier stands out for its expandable sides, offering pets extra room to relax during longer journeys, a feature that surpasses the more static designs like the Petskd Top-Expandable Small Pet Carrier. Its wheels and retractable handle make navigating airports easier, while the breathable mesh ensures good air flow. Compared with carriers without expansion, this model prioritizes pet comfort and owner convenience, but its bulkiness might be a drawback for smaller cars or cramped spaces. The plush bedding and multiple storage compartments add value, though the weight capacity limits it to pets up to 25 lbs. This pick is ideal for pet owners seeking a durable, multi-functional carrier that balances comfort with mobility.
Pros:- Expandable sides provide extra space for pets to relax
- Wheels and retractable handle facilitate easy airport navigation
- Breathable mesh enhances air circulation and comfort
- Includes plush bedding and storage compartments
Cons:- Only suitable for pets up to 25 lbs, limiting larger animals
- Can be bulky for small car trunks or tight storage
Best for: Pet owners who travel frequently and need a versatile, comfortable carrier with extra space and easy maneuverability.
Not ideal for: Owners of very small vehicles or those with limited storage space, since this carrier can be bulky and weighs more than simpler models.
- Dimensions:18 inches (L) x 11 inches (W) x 11 inches (H)
- Weight Capacity:Up to 25 lbs
- Material:Nylon, faux fleece
- Features:Expandable sides, mesh ventilation, wheels, retractable handle, plush bedding, storage compartments
Our verdict“This carrier is best for owners who value expandable space and mobility during air travel, despite its size and weight limitations.”
Petskd Top and Side Expandable Small Pet Carrier Airline Approved, Blue
This model is tailored for small pets under 12 lbs, making it a compact choice compared to larger carriers like the TSA Airline Approved Large Pet Travel Carrier. Its expandable sides and five-sided mesh ventilation ensure pets have ample room and airflow, which is especially important for anxious or heat-sensitive animals. The durable, waterproof, scratch-resistant fabric adds longevity, while its airline-specific dimensions guarantee under-seat compatibility. The main tradeoff is its limitation to very small pets, which makes it less suitable for owners with slightly larger animals or those needing more space. Its lightweight, sturdy construction is perfect for owners prioritizing safety, ventilation, and compliance with airline regulations.
Pros:- Expandable sides provide extra room for movement
- Five-sided mesh ventilation improves airflow and visibility
- Waterproof, scratch-resistant fabric enhances durability
- Designed specifically for airline under-seat dimensions
Cons:- Limited to pets under 12 lbs, restricting use for bigger animals

- Inner Size:15″L x 8″W x 11″H
- Pet Weight Limit:Dog under 10 lbs, Cat under 12 lbs
- Material:Waterproof, non-toxic, scratch-resistant polyester
- Expansion Area:2 sides, each adding 50% more space
- Ventilation:Mesh on 5 sides
Our verdict“This carrier suits owners of very small pets seeking a durable, well-ventilated, airline-approved option for under-seat travel.”
TSA Airline Approved Large Pet Travel Carrier, Expandable Soft Sided Dog & Cat Carrier for 2 Pets, X-Large, Black & White
This large, expandable carrier is designed for owners traveling with two small pets or pets needing extra space, setting it apart from more compact options like the Petskd Top-Expandable Small Pet Carrier. Its multiple entry points and ventilation windows boost pet comfort, especially during longer trips. The sturdy frame and waterproof fabric ensure durability, while the multiple carrying methods add convenience. The main tradeoff lies in its size—more cumbersome for small vehicles or tight storage spaces—and its weight capacity limits it to 20 lbs per pet. This makes it less suited for larger animals but perfect for owners seeking a versatile, multi-entrance carrier for airline or vet visits.
Pros:- Expandable design offers extra space for pets to move
- Multiple entry points and ventilation windows improve pet comfort
- Sturdy frame and waterproof material ensure durability
- Versatile carrying options for convenience
Cons:- Size may be cumbersome for small cars or tight storage areas
- Limited to 20 lbs per pet, not suitable for larger animals
Best for: Owners traveling with two small pets or those needing a spacious, multi-entry carrier for airline and travel use.
Not ideal for: People with larger pets or limited storage space, due to its size and weight.
- Dimensions:19.5″L x 12″W x 12″H (43.5″ expanded length)
- Max Pet Size:19″L x 11″W x 11″H
- Weight Capacity:20 lbs
- Material:900D Oxford fabric, waterproof
- Number of Mesh Windows:3

Our verdict“This carrier excels for owners with multiple small pets or those needing a spacious, multi-entrance airline-approved carrier, despite its larger footprint.”
Airline Approved Pet Carrier, Large Soft Sided Travel Carrier for Cats, Dogs, and Small Animals
This carrier offers a balanced combination of size, comfort, and flexibility, making it a solid alternative to the Sherpa Original Deluxe. Its expandable sides and multiple entrances allow pets to find their preferred space, while the ventilation and pockets support ease of handling and storage. The inclusion of a removable fleece pad adds comfort, and its lightweight design aids in handling during airport security or vet visits. The tradeoff is that, when fully expanded, it can become bulky, and it’s limited to pets under 20 lbs, which narrows its use case compared to larger models. This carrier is well-suited for pet owners who want a TSA-approved option that combines comfort and versatility without excessive bulk.
Pros:- Expandable sides add extra room for pet comfort
- Multiple access points and ventilation improve usability
- Lightweight yet sturdy construction
- Includes removable fleece pad and storage pockets
Cons:- Can be bulky when fully expanded, complicating storage
- Limited to pets under 20 lbs, restricting larger animals
Best for: Owners of small to medium pets up to 20 lbs seeking a TSA-approved, multi-entrance carrier with expandable sides.
Not ideal for: Travelers with larger animals or those needing a carrier for pets over 20 lbs, due to size and weight restrictions.
- Dimensions:19.5 x 12 x 12 inches
- Expanded Dimensions:43.5 x 32 x 12 inches
- Max Load:20 lbs
- Material:Waterproof Cationic Oxford, High Density EVA
- Color:Grey & Blue
- Features:Expandable sides, multiple entrances, pockets, fleece pad
Our verdict“This carrier offers a flexible, TSA-approved travel solution for owners of small to medium pets who value comfort and multiple access points.”
Petskd Top-Expandable Small Pet Carrier 18″x11″x11″ Airline Approved
This carrier is designed specifically for small pets under 12 lbs, fitting snugly under airline seats, similar to the GAPZER Cat Carrier. Its multiple mesh sides promote excellent ventilation, crucial for anxious or heat-sensitive pets. The durable waterproof fabric and safety locks enhance security and longevity, making it a dependable choice for frequent flyers. The main tradeoff is its strict size and weight limits, which exclude larger pets and may require careful measurement to ensure fit on your airline. It’s ideal for owners who prioritize compliance with airline regulations and need a compact, well-ventilated carrier for small animals.
Pros:- Suitable for pets under 12 lbs
- Multiple mesh sides ensure ventilation and visibility
- Waterproof, durable fabric for longevity
- Fits under airline seats for convenient travel
Cons:- Limited to very small pets, restricting versatility
- Requires precise measurement for airline compliance
Best for: Small pet owners seeking a compact, airline-approved carrier that fits under seats and provides good ventilation.
Not ideal for: Owners of larger pets or those needing more space for bigger animals, as the size and weight restrictions are strict.
- Unfolded Size:18″L x 11″W x 11″H
- Inner Size:15″L x 8″W x 10″H
- Material:Waterproof, non-toxic polyester
- Ventilation:Mesh on 5 sides
- Suitable Pet Weight:Dog under 10 lbs, Cat under 12 lbs
Our verdict“This carrier is perfect for owners of tiny pets seeking a compact, breathable, and airline-compliant solution for under-seat travel.”
Sherpa Original Deluxe Travel Pet Carrier, Airline Approved & Guaranteed On Board – Black, Medium
The Sherpa Original Deluxe stands out for its proven airline approval and compliance with major airline regulations, making it a dependable choice for frequent travelers. Its mesh panels facilitate airflow, ensuring a comfortable environment for pets, while multiple carrying options—handle, shoulder strap, and seatbelt pass-through—provide convenience and flexibility. Compared with the Henkelion Soft Carrier, Sherpa offers a more structured shape that prevents collapsing, but it limits pets to 16 pounds, which may not suit owners with larger animals. The washable liner simplifies cleanup, a key benefit for active pets or frequent travel. However, its size can be restrictive for bigger pets, and small parts in packaging pose minor safety concerns. This pick makes the most sense for pet owners prioritizing airline compliance and durability, especially those traveling regularly with small to medium pets.
Pros:- Airline approved and compliant with FAA regulations
- Ventilated mesh panels for airflow
- Multiple carrying options including handle, shoulder strap, and seatbelt pass-through
- Removable, washable liner for easy cleaning
Cons:- Limited to pets up to 16 pounds, restricting for bigger animals
- Size may be restrictive for larger or very active pets
- Small parts in packaging could pose a choking hazard if not discarded properly
Best for: Pet owners who need a reliable, airline-approved carrier with multiple carrying options for frequent travel with small to medium pets.
Not ideal for: Owners of larger pets over 16 pounds or those seeking a collapsible, lightweight option for occasional trips.
- Color:Black
- Size:Medium
- Dimensions:17″ x 11″ x 10.5″
- Maximum Pet Weight:16 pounds
Our verdict“This carrier is ideal for pet owners seeking a durable, airline-compliant option for small to medium pets with regular travel needs.”
Henkelion Small & Medium Pet Carrier for Cats and Dogs, TSA Airline Approved, Collapsible Waterproof Soft Sided Travel Carrier – Grey
Compared with Sherpa, the Henkelion Soft Carrier offers a more flexible, foldable design that appeals to travelers needing easy storage. Its lightweight polyester build and waterproof fabric make it durable yet easy to carry, with mesh sides providing good ventilation and visibility for pets. It’s well-suited for small to medium pets up to 15 pounds, but the dimensions may be restrictive for larger or longer pets, unlike the more rigid Sherpa model. The collapsible feature is a plus for owners with limited storage space, but over time, the fabric may lose some rigidity, affecting pet security. This carrier is perfect for owners who prioritize portability and storage, especially for infrequent or short trips, but less so for those with bigger or more active pets.
Pros:- Lightweight and durable construction
- Foldable for compact storage
- Mesh sides for ventilation and pet visibility
- Waterproof fabric for added protection
Cons:- Suitable only for pets up to 15 pounds, limiting for larger animals
- Dimensions may be restrictive for longer or bigger pets
- Fabric may lose shape over time, reducing security
Best for: Travelers with small to medium pets who want a lightweight, foldable carrier for occasional trips or storage efficiency.
Not ideal for: Owners of larger pets or those seeking a more rigid, structured carrier for frequent or long journeys.
- Dimensions:15″ x 9″ x 9″
- Weight Capacity:15 lbs
- Material:Polyester fabric
- Color:Grey
- Features:TSA airline approved, collapsible, waterproof, mesh sides, adjustable shoulder strap
Our verdict“This carrier suits owners looking for a lightweight, space-saving option for small pets during occasional travel or storage needs.”
Soft-Sided Pet Carrier for Cats and Dogs, Collapsible and Airline Approved
This soft-sided carrier offers a flexible, lightweight solution for small pets up to 16 pounds, with the advantage of multiple entrances and breathable mesh windows that enhance accessibility and airflow. Its sturdy steel frame maintains shape during travel, unlike simpler collapsible models, but it still folds flat for easy storage. While its dimensions (17″ x 11″ x 11″) make it suitable for airline requirements, pet owners must carefully measure their animals to avoid a cramped fit, especially for active or longer pets. Compared to Sherpa, this model emphasizes access and ventilation, but it sacrifices some rigidity. It’s a good choice for pet owners seeking a balance between comfort, visibility, and convenience for air and car travel.
Pros:- Lightweight and easy to carry
- Multiple entrances for convenience and pet access
- Breathable mesh windows for air circulation
- Collapsible for compact storage
Cons:- Limited to pets up to 16 pounds, restricting for larger animals
- May not offer enough space for very active or larger pets
- Frame rigidity may diminish over time
Best for: Owners of small, active pets who want multiple access points and good airflow in a lightweight, airline-approved carrier.
Not ideal for: Pet owners with larger animals or those needing a highly rigid or spacious carrier for long travel durations.
- Dimensions:17 inch x 11 inch x 11 inch
- Weight:2.2 lbs
- Maximum Pet Weight:16 lbs
- Material:Tear-resistant fabric
- Features:Breathable mesh, removable washable mat, collapsible, airline approved, adjustable shoulder strap
Our verdict“Ideal for small, active pets and owners prioritizing multi-access and ventilation during travel or car trips.”
Wakytu TSA & Airline Approved Soft Pet Carrier for Cats and Dogs, 17.7 x 11 x 8.3 inches
Compared with the other soft carriers, Wakytu’s design emphasizes fitting under most airplane seats, making it ideal for travelers who prioritize seat compliance. Its waterproof polyester material and reinforced handles ensure durability and ease of handling, while five mesh windows guarantee airflow and pet visibility. Suitable for pets under 13 pounds (cats) or 9 pounds (dogs), it’s less versatile for larger animals. Its dimensions are tight, so careful measurement is key—unlike the larger Sherpa or GAZPER carriers—yet it offers a secure, anti-escape design for peace of mind. This carrier makes the most sense for frequent flyers who need a dependable under-seat solution that balances comfort, safety, and airline compliance.
Pros:- Fits under most airplane seats for convenience
- Multiple entrances and ventilation windows
- Durable, waterproof fabric with reinforced handles
- Anti-escape design for added security
Cons:- Designed only for very small pets, limiting versatility
- Careful measurement needed to ensure fit
- May not be compatible with all airline under-seat dimensions
Best for: Travelers with small cats or dogs under 13 pounds who need a compact, seat-friendly carrier with durable features.
Not ideal for: Owners of larger or more active pets requiring extra space or a more rigid structure for stability.
- Dimensions:17.7 x 11 x 8.3 inches
- Recommended Pet Size:Under 13 lbs (cat), under 9 lbs (dog)
- Material:Polyester fabric
- Ventilation:5 mesh windows
- Features:Waterproof, anti-escape design, adjustable shoulder strap, reinforced handles
Our verdict“This carrier is a solid choice for frequent flyers needing a compact, durable, and airline-approved under-seat pet solution for small animals.”
GAPZER Cat Carrier 18x11x11 inches, Airline Approved Soft Pet Kennel
Compared to the more compact Wakytu, the GAPZER carrier provides a roomier interior, making it suitable for medium-sized pets up to 25 pounds. Its 18x11x11-inch dimensions accommodate cats and small dogs who need more space to feel comfortable during travel. The escape-resistant zippers and four-sided mesh ensure security and ventilation, similar to the Sherpa’s emphasis on safety and airflow. The convertible design offers flexibility for storage or attaching to seats, but its larger size may be too bulky for owners seeking a lightweight or highly portable option. The removable reversible cushion enhances comfort, yet the larger size could be a drawback for those with limited space or infrequent travelers. It’s best suited for owners prioritizing spaciousness and durability for medium-sized pets.
Pros:- Spacious interior suitable for medium-sized pets
- Escape-resistant zippers for added security
- Good ventilation with four-sided mesh
- Convertible design for storage or seatbelt attachment
Cons:- Larger size may reduce portability for occasional travel
- May be too bulky for owners with limited storage space

How We Picked
I evaluated these carriers based on strict airline approval standards, focusing on size compliance, durability, and user convenience. I also considered ease of cleaning, ventilation, and overall build quality, since these factors directly impact pet safety and owner satisfaction. Price point was a secondary factor, with a preference for models that offer the best combination of features versus cost. The ranking emphasizes carriers that are most likely to pass airline inspections and provide a comfortable experience for both pet and owner.Factors to Consider When Choosing Airline Approved Pet Travel Carrier
Choosing the right airline approved pet travel carrier involves more than just meeting size requirements. You need a model that offers safety, comfort, and ease of use. Considering these factors helps prevent last-minute surprises at the airport and ensures a smoother journey for your pet. Below are the key considerations to keep in mind when selecting your carrier.Size and Airline Regulations
Size restrictions vary by airline, so verify the specific dimensions allowed for cabin baggage. A carrier that’s too large risks being denied boarding, while one that’s too small can cause discomfort. Always measure your pet and compare it to the carrier’s interior dimensions. Remember, some airlines have weight limits as well, so consider both size and weight capacity to avoid issues during check-in.
Build Quality and Durability
Opt for carriers with sturdy frames and high-quality materials that can withstand handling during travel. Soft-sided carriers should have reinforced seams and reliable zippers. Durability is especially important if you plan to travel frequently, as a poorly made carrier can break or become uncomfortable for your pet. However, heavier builds might compromise portability, so balance robustness with ease of carrying.
Ventilation and Comfort
Good airflow is essential for pet safety and comfort, especially in warmer environments. Look for carriers with mesh panels or multiple ventilation sides. Padding inside the carrier also contributes to a more comfortable ride, but ensure it’s removable for cleaning. Consider your pet’s size and health needs, as a well-ventilated space prevents overheating and reduces stress.
Portability and Features
Features like shoulder straps, handles, or wheels can make a significant difference in ease of transport. For frequent travelers, a lightweight carrier with ergonomic straps or wheels can reduce fatigue. Expandable models offer extra space but can add bulk, so consider your typical travel scenario. Simplicity and functionality should guide your choice to avoid cumbersome designs.
Price and Value
Prices range from budget-friendly to premium models, but higher cost doesn’t always guarantee better quality or airline approval. Focus on your specific needs—if you travel often, investing in a durable, feature-rich carrier makes sense. For occasional trips, a basic, affordable model that meets airline standards may suffice. Watch for added costs like replacement pads or accessories that can increase overall value.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I ensure my carrier is airline approved?
To confirm an airline approved carrier, check the specific airline’s cabin baggage size and weight restrictions. Look for carriers explicitly labeled as compliant with airline standards, and verify measurements against your airline’s policies. It’s also helpful to read reviews from travelers who have used the carrier on your intended airline, as approval can sometimes vary between carriers and aircraft types.
Can I use a soft-sided carrier for a larger or heavier pet?
Soft-sided carriers are generally suitable for smaller pets within specified weight limits. For larger or heavier animals, a more rigid, reinforced carrier might be necessary to provide adequate support and safety. Always check your airline’s maximum weight allowances and ensure the carrier’s construction can handle the pet’s size without risking damage or discomfort.
What features are most important for pet comfort during travel?
Ventilation is paramount to prevent overheating, especially in warm climates or during long flights. Padding inside the carrier adds to your pet’s comfort, while a secure but easy-to-access opening helps with quick checks or adjustments. Additionally, selecting a carrier with a secure locking system prevents accidental escapes, which is a safety priority during busy airport movements.
Is it better to choose a carrier with expandable features?
Expandable carriers offer extra space when parked, which can reduce pet stress and provide more comfort on longer trips. However, they tend to be bulkier and heavier, potentially complicating handling and storage. Consider your typical travel duration and how often you’ll need the extra room before opting for an expandable model.
How often should I replace my pet travel carrier?
Replace your carrier if it shows signs of wear, such as torn mesh, broken zippers, or compromised structural integrity. Regular use and travel can weaken materials over time, especially with frequent handling. A well-maintained carrier that meets safety standards should last several years, but prioritizing your pet’s safety and comfort means replacing it at the first signs of deterioration.

For most pet owners, the Sherpa Original Deluxe Travel Pet Carrier offers the best balance of durability, comfort, and airline approval—ideal for frequent travelers and those seeking peace of mind. Budget-conscious travelers can opt for the Amazon Basics Mesh Pet Travel Carrier, which still meets essential standards without breaking the bank. For those needing extra space and mobility, the Ruff Life 101 Carrier on Wheels provides expansion and easy transport features. Beginners or occasional travelers should prioritize carriers with straightforward designs and proven airline approval, while frequent flyers might prefer premium models with added features for convenience and pet well-being.
